The Task

Garland UK is a specialist building envelope manufacturer and supplier, providing quality systems, technical support, and unbiased product guidance to specifiers in the surveying, estates, and architectural sectors. Part of Garland Industries, Garland UK proudly upholds its legacy of excellence within the roofing and waterproofing industry.

Garland’s Sustainability Commitment was developed and launched in 2022, showcasing their commitment and approach to sustainability across four pillars: carbon, resource efficiency, people and social value.

Garland UK engaged with Action Sustainability for support with recommendations of what to include within their first annual report including support with data collection and validation, as well as an updated action plan to support with progression against targets. The purpose of this was to assist Garland UK in demonstrating what they have achieved in 2023 in terms of sustainability progression, understand their next steps to achieve their sustainability commitments and provide an action plan that breaks down tasks to achieve these commitments.

The Action

Firstly, a discussion to understand progress to date was undertaken with Garland UK, where we discussed progress made in 2023 and their action plan for the next two years.

During this discussion, a materiality assessment was also undertaken to understand Garland’s key environmental, social and governance risks and priorities. This was supported by a detailed discussion on how Garland UK was progressing against their strategy pillars, and what the key blockers and opportunities for progression were.

A ey outcome from this session was the need to evolve and streamline the strategy to ensure effectiveness – this meant that the people and social value pillars were merged, allowing for the opportunity for growth across social initiatives.

Next, data collection and validation were undertaken, with data requested to showcase sustainability performance for 2023, which was then analysed to draw out key themes and further opportunities for progression. The data was validated to ensure it was both sensible and realistic.

Carbon data was also inputted into the Sustainability Tool by Garland UK, which Action Sustainability then reviewed by undertaking a desk-based review of the data which was supported by a virtual call with Garland UK to sense check the data sets and scopes of calculations.

Following that, a report of recommendations to include within Garland’s annual report was completed, which summarised the analysis of all the sustainability data. This was further supplemented by a new action plan for 2024 onwards, to support Garland with progressing against their sustainability commitments and targets.

Finally, a close out meeting with the sustainability working group took place, sharing all results and findings.
