The Task

As a Distribution and Transmission Network Operator, SP Energy Networks (SPEN) ensures electricity flows to homes and businesses throughout Central and Southern Scotland, North and Mid Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire.

The UK and devolved Governments have set ambitious decarbonisation targets of Net Zero by 2045 and 2050, respectively. A key focus for SPEN is preparing the grid for increased electricity demand to support the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy, in line with these targets. This will enhance energy security, protect consumers from climate change risks, and foster green growth, job creation, and investment in local communities and regions.

With this in mind, SPEN aims to strengthen its social sustainability commitments and create a positive impact through upcoming strategies that drive a just transition approach.

The Action

Gap Analysis: Action Sustainability conducted a comprehensive assessment of SPEN’s current operations, governmental requirements, and stakeholder interactions. This included a detailed evaluation of SPEN’s existing social sustainability commitments, including their Just Transition Strategy. The gap analysis report highlighted key areas where SPEN could enhance their impact on social sustainability.

Developing Social Commitments: Using a logical and evidence-based approach, we developed social commitments for SPEN that align with governmental requirements. These commitments were crafted in line with SPEN’s core values, Just Transition strategy, and the central objectives of their operations. Furthermore, they took into account the evolving nature of the utilities sector, adhering to relevant standards, local policies, and regulatory requirements.

Social Sustainability Strategy Support: We identified and outlined a five-year roadmap to guide SPEN’s efforts. Our strategy ensured a comprehensive focus on fundamental aspects, policy and strategy refinement, capability building, and supply chain processes.

The Outcome, Benefits and Lessons Learnt

  • Foundation for Impact: The social commitments provide a strategic direction for maximising efforts on initiatives that create mutually beneficial outcomes for SPEN’s business. These commitments outline clear themes that can be translated into tangible positive impacts, enhancing SPEN’s engagement with communities and supply partners.
  • Strategic Alignment: By aligning the social sustainability commitments with SPEN’s strategy and business needs, we ensured that these elements are integral to their operations. This alignment enables SPEN to go beyond compliance requirements and maximise their positive impact.
  • Forward-Looking Vision: The five-year roadmap offers a clear path for SPEN, integrating social commitments into their long-term strategy. This proactive approach is designed to drive positive results for the business, customers, industry leaders, and the communities they serve.
  • Just Transition: Successfully embedding social sustainability into the business strategy requires a holistic approach. This approach ensures that the transition to a more sustainable and equitable energy system is fair to all stakeholders.
  • Evidence-Based Strategy: Basing social commitments on solid evidence and thorough analysis ensures they are relevant, impactful, and sustainable.
  • Continuous Improvement: Social Sustainability and Just Transition are dynamic and evolving areas. They should be continually adjusted and adapted in response to changes in business operations and community needs.
