The Task

Amtico, part of the Mannington Company, are a designer and manufacturer of luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). Based in Coventry, they have been designing and manufacturing unique LVT since the early 1960s.

Their tiles have warranties of 20 years+ and are designed for life. They have four core collections – Signature, Spacia, Form and Click Smart and a range of wood, stone and abstract designs to choose from. Amtico Bio is their first bio-attributed LVT flooring, made with sustainable PVC from biomass, a renewable raw material which saves more than 90% of carbon emissions compared to the manufacture of standards PVC.

Amtico’s sustainability strategy, Responsible Foundations was developed with support from Action Sustainability and launched in 2022.

Following this, Amtico sought Action Sustainability’s expertise and technical knowledge again to draft their next (2023) annual sustainability report.

The Action

Firstly, desktop research was undertaken to compare annual reports of three stakeholder groups: clients, competitors and best in practice which was summarised in a report.

Next, a workshop with key sustainability individuals was carried out to discuss progress in 2023 and content for the annual report. This involved going through each page of the last report and outlining what should be improved, changed, removed or kept in.

Following that, 10 hours worth of interviews were undertaken both with relevant colleagues and external stakeholders. The findings were then written up into case studies.

Alongside this, data was requested and collated into a spreadsheet alongside the previous years data to track progress. A sample of the data was selected where further evidence was requested to ensure there was sufficient proof to back claims. All data was validated and aligned with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) reporting requirements.

The report was then drafted and two rounds of reviewing and editing followed. Finally, a close out meeting with the sustainability working group took place, sharing next steps and feedback.

The Outcome, Benefits and Lessons Learnt

Overall, Amtico were provided with two final report drafts – a longer and shorter version, as well as a GRI Content Index document. This enabled Amtico to choose the version that was most appropriate for them, and then re-design it to give it their own look and feel.

The final report is now on their website and allows Amtico to clearly and transparently communicate their sustainability progress to internal and external stakeholders alike.
