The Task

Tilbury Douglas, a prominent UK-based building, infrastructure and engineering services company aspires to be in the upper quartile of construction businesses in terms of modern slavery and labour exploitation due diligence. This is reflected in their values and culture, as part of their wider approach to protecting and respecting human rights.

Tilbury Douglas sought Action Sustainability’s expertise to review their existing policies, procedures and awareness against best practice outlined in BS 25700: Organisational Responses to Modern Slavery, with a view to identifying strengths and opportunities to improve, reflected in a practical set of recommendations.

The Action

The first phase of work was to conduct a high-level desktop review of Tilbury Douglas’ policies and key documents linked to modern slavery due diligence, such as the modern slavery statement and sustainable procurement policy. This gave Action Sustainability an insight into Tilbury Douglas’ governance structure and approach to preventing, identifying, managing and mitigating the risks of modern slavery and labour exploitation.

Next, Action Sustainability facilitated an in-person workshop for senior decision makers from across the business, including board representatives, HR, operations, commercial and procurement. Tilbury Douglas’ CEO, Paul Gandy, opened the workshop, highlighting the senior-level commitment to this workstream.

Action Sustainability used its own assessment tool, based on the BS 25700 framework, to facilitate discussion and capture feedback on all aspects of modern slavery due diligence – from policy and governance and remediation, through to the role of contract management and how to record and report progress.

Action Sustainability then used the information gathered in both the desktop review and workshop to produce a detailed gap analysis report to include key findings, a set of recommendations and a high level implementation plan

“The service provided by EJ and Will was exceptional. The face-to-face workshop with our senior leadership team was invaluable. It not only challenged our thinking on all aspects of modern slavery due diligence, but also provided clarity on our progress to date while pinpointing areas for improvement. EJ’s inclusion of case studies and practical examples throughout brough the subject to life, vividly highlighting the risks and inspiring us with best practices in modern slavery due diligence. The comprehensive report detailing key findings, recommendations, corresponding action plan and best practice case studies was exactly what we needed. Their expertise and guidance were instrumental in shaping our approach going forward.  We wholeheartedly recommend their services.”
