The Task

Amtico, part of the Mannington Company, are a designer and manufacturer of luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). Based in Coventry, they have been designing and manufacturing unique LVT since the early 1960s.

Their tiles have warranties of 20 years+ and are designed for life. They have four core collections – Signature, Spacia, Form and Click Smart and a range of wood, stone and abstract designs to choose from. Amtico Bio is their first bio-attributed LVT flooring, made with sustainable PVC from biomass, a renewable raw material which saves more than 90% of carbon emissions compared to the manufacture of standards PVC.

Amtico’s sustainability strategy Responsible Foundations was developed and launched in 2022, with their first annual report launched in 2023. Their strategy focuses on four key pillars: fighting climate change; reducing waste; empowering people; and championing innovation. As part of this, they previously undertook a materiality assessment in 2019.

Amtico engaged with Action Sustainability to carry out a double materiality assessment. The purpose of this was to identify risks, opportunities and impacts that were relevant to Amtico both now and in the future, by looking at both impact materiality and financial materiality (inside-out and outside in).

The Action

Firstly, desktop research was undertaken to identify material impacts for Amtico right now, along with horizon-scanning the impacts that are relevant to Amtico over the next 5-10 years. The results were presented via a report.

Next, a workshop with senior leadership was carried out and two exercises were undertaken: 1) a stakeholder mapping exercise and 2) a materiality assessment. This involved discussion and identification of the issues that Amtico believe are most material from both an impact and a financial materiality perspective.

Following that, two separate workshops were facilitated, one with internal stakeholders and the other with external stakeholders. During these workshops, stakeholders were invited to discuss Amtico’s double materiality in more depth.

In parallel, an online survey was designed, reviewed and sent to stakeholders. The survey asked stakeholders to provide their opinion, across all three pillars of sustainability, as to which impacts were most relevant and most significant to Amtico. The results were then analysed to provide both quantitative and qualitative information.

Two workshops were then held, again one with the internal stakeholders, and the other with external stakeholders. During these workshops, the results of the survey were shared and stakeholders were invited to share their opinions on ‘what next’ for Amtico.

Finally, a close-out meeting with the sustainability working group took place, sharing all results and findings.

“As always, we experienced great service from Action Sustainability in helping us conduct our double materiality assessment. They were thorough in their process and worked very professionally with our internal and stakeholders to assess what key material issues we, at Amtico, should be focusing on. The finished product is exactly what we require and is instrumental to our overall sustainability strategy and roadmap.”

The Outcome, Benefits and Lessons Learnt

Overall, Amtico were provided with a visual summary double materiality assessment graph, which they can use to inform strategic direction and priorities towards sustainability. This was supported with breakdowns of responses by different stakeholder groups, alongside all outputs and ideas from the five workshops.

The assessment enabled Amtico to engage with relevant stakeholders in a meaningful way, ensuring that voices were heard and that the outputs influence their ongoing sustainability delivery.
