The Task

LMJV is the joint venture between Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy & Sons Limited, two of the most prominent engineering and construction companies in Europe.

The pair are working to deliver HS2’s northern section of phase one enabling works. HS2 is the new high-speed railway track in Britain, expected to carry over 300,000 passengers a day, and supporting the transition to a net zero carbon economy.

LMJV and its supply chain are committed to the overarching strategic goals of the HS2 project around Health, Safety and Wellbeing; Skills, Employment and Education (SEE); Environment and Collaboration. LMJV needed a robust way to measure and monitor their sustainability indicators over time.

The Action

Currently LMJV reports monthly against six sustainability issues measured through 51 indicators aligned to the project’s requirements.

This enables LMJV to utilise the Sustainability Tool to assess these issues and report against sustainability indicators during each phase of the project, including site clearance and preparation, erection of safety fencing and mitigation activities.

The Outcome, Benefits and Lessons Learnt

From the early implementation phase, the Tool provided suppliers with a clear reporting framework helping them to better understand the importance behind reporting sustainability performance and the type of qualitative and quantitative data needed to comprehensively do so.

LMJV recognised a direct impact to the quality of engagement with sustainability reporting, demonstrated through an improvement in compliance on the project.

Moreover, the Tool has offered the joint venture an innovative way to collect data from their complex supply chain, removing historic inefficiencies and issues related to relying on reporting in spreadsheets. The Tool has also made it easier to identify performance gaps and manage them effectively.
