» SP Energy Networks Advances Social Sustainability with Just Transition Strategy
Explore how Action Sustainability’s gap analysis and five-year roadmap helped SP Energy Networks align with social sustainability goals and drive a fair energy transition.
As a Distribution and Transmission Network Operator, SP Energy Networks (SPEN) ensures electricity flows to homes and businesses throughout Central and Southern Scotland, North and Mid Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire.
The UK and devolved Governments have set ambitious decarbonisation targets of Net Zero by 2045 and 2050, respectively. A key focus for SPEN is preparing the grid for increased electricity demand to support the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy, in line with these targets. This will enhance energy security, protect consumers from climate change risks, and foster green growth, job creation, and investment in local communities and regions.
With this in mind, SPEN aims to strengthen its social sustainability commitments and create a positive impact through upcoming strategies that drive a just transition approach.
Gap Analysis: Action Sustainability conducted a comprehensive assessment of SPEN’s current operations, governmental requirements, and stakeholder interactions. This included a detailed evaluation of SPEN’s existing social sustainability commitments, including their Just Transition Strategy. The gap analysis report highlighted key areas where SPEN could enhance their impact on social sustainability.
Developing Social Commitments: Using a logical and evidence-based approach, we developed social commitments for SPEN that align with governmental requirements. These commitments were crafted in line with SPEN’s core values, Just Transition strategy, and the central objectives of their operations. Furthermore, they took into account the evolving nature of the utilities sector, adhering to relevant standards, local policies, and regulatory requirements.
Social Sustainability Strategy Support: We identified and outlined a five-year roadmap to guide SPEN’s efforts. Our strategy ensured a comprehensive focus on fundamental aspects, policy and strategy refinement, capability building, and supply chain processes.
