The Task

STRABAG UK commissioned Action Sustainability to support its efforts in understanding and enhancing sustainable procurement within the organisation, reinforcing their commitment to “Work on Progress.”​

They sought clarity on their current sustainable procurement practices and guidance on embedding sustainability more deeply into their supply chain and procurement operations, aligned with the ISO 20400:2017 sustainable procurement guidance standard.​

The Action

  • Document Review for ISO 20400 Alignment: We conducted a thorough review of STRABAG UK’s existing practices to assess their alignment with ISO 20400, identifying areas for improvement.​
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Collaborative Workshop: We engaged key stakeholders from STRABAG UK’s Environmental & Sustainability, Supply Chain, Procurement, and People & Culture teams through a collaborative workshop, discussing strengths and opportunities in sustainable procurement.​
  • Comprehensive Findings and Strategic Recommendations: We delivered a detailed report outlining key findings and actionable recommendations to enhance STRABAG UK’s sustainable procurement practices and alignment with ISO 20400 standards.​

The Outcome, Benefits and Lessons Learnt

STRABAG UK has established foundational sustainability drivers and leadership commitment. However, opportunities remain to enhance transparency in procurement priorities and strengthen diligence beyond Tier 1 suppliers. While governance and internal engagement are robust, structured processes and metrics for sustainable procurement require refinement. Future focus areas include integrating sustainability across procurement planning, enhancing supplier assessments, and improving post-award contract management for sustained impact.​

Conducting this gap analysis has provided STRABAG UK with actionable insights to progress towards best practices in sustainable procurement, ensuring alignment with ISO 20400 and fostering long-term sustainability within their operations.​
